The ABC’s of CBD

CBD. You’ve heard of it, and maybe you’ve tried it. But do you understand what this product is and how it can truly benefit you?

Cannabidiol, known also as CBD, is a cannabis compound derived from hemp. Many people wonder if CBD can get you high, and the answer is no. Why? Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the substance derived from marijuana that produces the “high” you feel. Industrial hemp is legally allowed to have up to 0.3% THC, which is not enough to cause a high.

That may leave you wondering, what CBD can do for you then. The answer is… a lot!

CBD works by latching onto receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system, your internal regulating system—with receptors found predominantly in the brain and nervous system. These receptors play a role in pain, sleep, mood, inflammation, and response to stress.

In fact, more than 60 percent of CBD users report they take CBD for its ability to relieve anxiety. Other top reasons? Insomnia, chronic pain, and depression.

Another question many users, or potential users of CBD wonder is, “Can you get addicted to CBD?” CBD is not addictive since it does not produce a high that typically comes with THC.

It’s important to note that not all CBD is alike though. In fact, there are three types of hemp extracts that are used to make CBD products.

  • Isolate: A CBD isolate only contains pure cannabidiol extracted from the plant. There are over 100 types of cannabinoids found in hemp plants. Isolate products are made with just CBD, no terpenes, or other cannabinoids.
  • Broad Spectrum: Broad-spectrum CBD oil is made with a wide range of cannabinoids and terpenes, but THC has been reduced all the way down to what is called a “non-detectable level.” Choose broad-spectrum CBD oil if you want the full benefits of CBD oil without any THC.
  • Full Spectrum: Full-spectrum CBD oil is made with all the cannabinoids found naturally in the cannabis plant, including up to the legal amount of 0.3% THC. Full-spectrum CBD oil is the most natural derivation of the hemp plant, as it does not exclude any cannabinoids and typically goes through the least amount of processing. Choose full-spectrum CBD oil if you want the full benefits of CBD, and you are comfortable with using up to 0.3% THC.
