Step one: the screening call
Dr. Rusnak sees patients who have first spoken with a member of our clinical team. Send an appointment request through the form on our contact page, or call the clinic. Within one business day we call you back to review what you are dealing with, confirm that acupuncture or another treatment is the right fit, answer questions about cost and coverage, and book your first visit. Veterans are asked about VA Community Care on the same call.
Your first visit
Every patient is reviewed first. Then the healing begins.
Screening call
Send an appointment request. A member of our clinical team calls within one business day to review your concern, confirm that acupuncture or another modality is the right fit, and book your first visit.
Consultation
A detailed review of your history and current symptoms. Tongue and pulse examination, per traditional diagnostics.
Needle placement
Thin, sterile, single‑use needles at specific points. You may feel a slight pinch or a dull pressure.
Retention
Needles stay in place for 15 to 30 minutes while you rest and breathe. Many patients fall asleep.
Removal
Needles are removed gently. Cupping or manual work may follow, depending on your plan.
Your plan
Exercises, dietary changes or lifestyle adjustments to hold the benefit between sessions.
Patient forms
Once your first visit is booked we send your new‑patient paperwork by text or email so you can complete it at home. It covers your health history, current medications and consent to treatment. If you would rather complete it on paper, arrive fifteen minutes early and we will have it ready.
Insurance and payment
- VA Community Care. Authorized visits are billed directly to the VA. See how it works.
- Insurance. Coverage for acupuncture varies by plan. Have your card ready on the screening call and we will tell you what we can verify. Useful questions for your insurer: is acupuncture covered, how many visits per year, is a referral needed, is there a co‑pay or deductible.
- Self‑pay. Fees depend on the treatment. Treatment packages and monthly plans are available for ongoing care; ask on the call.
- Corporate and group care. See Wellness in the Workplace.
How to prepare
- Write down your questions and bring them; we are here to answer them.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing so points on the arms, legs and back are easy to reach.
- Eat a light meal an hour or two before; avoid arriving hungry or very full.
- Skip strenuous exercise, alcohol and recreational drugs for several hours after your visit.
- Between visits, note what changes: pain that eases, moves or returns, sleep, energy, digestion. It shapes the next session.
Rescheduling
If you need to change an appointment, call us as early as you can so the time can go to another patient. Late cancellations and missed visits may be subject to a fee.
